Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted this Thursday (26) Argentina’s interest in joining the BRICS group (made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
“Argentina, through the mouth of its Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero, expressed the desire to become a full member of the BRICS,” Lavrov said in an interview with the RT Arabic television channel.
Argentina’s long-standing interest in joining the group is supported by China, and indeed Cafiero was recently invited to participate in a virtual meeting of the group.
Lavrov added that the group is currently preparing for its 14th leaders’ summit, scheduled for June 24. Argentina was also invited to the summit, which will be chaired by Chinese dictator Xi Jinping.
The head of Russian diplomacy stressed that Moscow is in favor of “constructive and positive partnerships, which are not directed against anyone”.
At the May 19 virtual meeting, Cafiero called for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, something he considered “imperative” to redirect the “global crisis”, and warned that emerging and developing countries are particularly affected by the increase. of food, fertilizer and energy prices.
