Red Bull chooses second driver
Perez or not Perez? Red Bull will be asked to choose who to join Max Verstappen by the summer break, now that the crisis with the three-time world champion seems to have passed the worst phase. The ideal profile is that of a driver who is both fast and reliable but not to the point of undermining the Dutchman either on the track or in internal relationships. A choice that is reminiscent of the one made by Ferrari with Michael Schumacher and which seems incompatible with the Norris, Alonso and Sainz hypotheses that have been made in recent months.
The history of Red Bull in Formula 1 has almost always seen a clear separation between first and second leaders: beyond the superficial words Sergio Perez (whose contract expires at the end of the year) he was always treated as number two, and the Mexican has always accepted it. Will it still be so by 2025? For councilor Helmut Marko, it is the main hypothesis.
Marko’s words
“Discussions are ongoing and Checo remains our first option. We want to clarify things before the summer break, even if we are certainly not putting ourselves under pressure”, these are the words of the Austrian to his colleagues Kleine Zeitung.
In recent weeks, thanks to his performances in RB, Yuki Tsunoda has also risen in prices: “Of course he is also part of the negotiations. In general, we have several options in his contract that tie him up for several years”. In short, initially Daniel Ricciardo was the number one danger for Perez. Now Checowith the performances at the beginning of the year, has returned to the top of the preferences (and taking advantage of the good moment, before Imola he asked for a two-year renewal), but if the “mid-year crisis” were to return in 2024, he could be overtaken by Tsunoda.
