While in some countries we celebrate May 17 as the International Day against Homophobia, a few hours away by plane, sexual freedom is despised and persecuted. In Africa there is a wave of LGTBIphobia: relationships between the same sex are a crime in 31 of the 54 countries on the continent. In some, such as Uganda, even the death penalty is applied. It is difficult to measure violence because there is no official data, and that is also why, victims and associations say, it is so difficult to get help and even medical treatment.
