Eight other women, former and current employees of Sony PlayStationadded their reports of sexist treatment to a class action proposal against the video game giant.
The new statements add to the statement by the former security analyst Emma Majo that PlayStation, like many other video game companies, has long had a workplace culture hostile to women.
Majo filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against PlayStation last November, not just for what she says was her wrongful firing after complaining about sexism, but on behalf of all the women who worked for the company. Sony denied Majo’s claims last month, asking a court to drop the case for lack of specific facts.
In response, Majo’s attorney recently filed statements from eight women, including a current PlayStation employee.
Women describe a range of behaviors across multiple US-based PlayStation offices, including humiliating comments, unwelcome advances, a lack of attention paid to their work or ideas, and, more frequently, a feeling that it was more difficult for women to be promoted in the company.
Marie Harrington, a veteran of Sony Online Entertainment and Sony PlayStation for over 16 years, cited the lack of women for senior roles. She said only four women were considered for promotions, compared to nearly 70 men. She described hearing comments about the family life of female candidates that were not made about male candidates.
Another woman cited a third-party study that found a “large imbalance in terms of employee distribution“on his team.”I believe Sony is not equipped to properly handle toxic environments“, he wrote Kara Johnsonformer program manager.
Johnson said she knew 10 women who had left her office in Rancho Bernardo, California in the four months prior to her departure, a sign of systemic problems for her. Her statement from her includes a letter she shared with female employees when she left the company in January, citing repeated attempts to inform superiors about gender bias, alleged discrimination against pregnant women, and more.
Sony has not yet responded to a request for comment on the new allegations that have surfaced.
