Digital Foundry has published its analysis of the console and PC ports of Persona 5 Royal. Apparently the tech enthusiasts weren’t particularly happy with the version Nintendo Switch and, to a lesser extent, performance on Steam Deck.
Let’s start with the positive notes reported for the Nintendo Switch version of Persona 5 Royal. According to Digital Foundry, loading times are short and cleverly masked through short animations. Furthermore, the animated cutscenes do not show visible artifacts, despite the extremely small size of the application compared to other consoles. All the 3D elements on the screen run stably at 30 fps without showing any problems whatsoever and in general the framerate has been shown to be stable throughout the duration of their tests.
Moving on to the negative notes, Digital Foundry was not impressed by the resolution of the Switch version of Persona 5 Royal. When the console is connected to the dock it turns a 1440x810pso we are a long way from Full HD.
The problem with Persona 5 Royal is that it is “a game that hugely depends on the number of raw pixels to satisfactorily represent the small details, such as the fine lines that surround the character models. It has an aesthetic. ultra-high contrast without any kind of image processing, it also lacks a simple post-AA filter, so aliasing and other visual deficiencies are clearly visible. Already 1080p image quality suffers, but at 810p it becomes problematic. It’s not too much bad, but I expected better results, “said Oliver Mackenzie in his analysis.
In portable mode things get even worse, as the resolution even drops to 960x540p, 56% of the pixels compared to the 720p supported by the console screen. The result is unsatisfactory image quality, according to Digital Foundry.
“Expect a blurry and inaccurate image with clumsy handling of details in the distance. This is far from the 720p I was hoping for (for portable mode). At least Altus has opted for a bilinear scale, unlike other recent low Switch conversions. resolution, so the artifacts caused by aliasing are not unnecessarily highlighted, “added Mackenzie.
Digital Foundry was also not impressed with the results recorded on Steam Deck from Persona 5 Royal.
The game could apparently run smoothly at 1080p and 60 fps, but as soon as the tutorial ends and you start exploring the city, the performances drop dramatically and inexplicably. To the point that it is suggested to limit the framerate to 40 fps via the 40 Hz option of Valve’s PC-console display.
Another problem is related to the artistic style of Persona 5 Royal and it Steam Deck screen, which apparently collide with each other. Digital Foundry explains that the game uses a sharp color scheme that makes extensive use of pure black. In contrast, Steam Deck’s IPS display is somewhat mediocre and fails to do the game justice.
No particular criticism for the other console ports of Persona 5 Royal (here are the details on resolution and framerate shared by ElAnalistaDeBits), with the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions that have an edge since they can reach both 4K than 60 fps.
What do you think? Are you playing Persona 5 Royal on Switch or Steam Deck? Do you agree with Digital Foundry’s conclusions?
