The former head of the Nicaraguan Army, retired general Humberto Ortega, was placed under “permanent medical care” at his home after orders from his brother, dictator Daniel Ortega. The national police and the ministry of health installed the equipment this Tuesday (21).
“A Specialized Medical Assistance Unit was installed to treat the illnesses that afflicted and continue to afflict General Ortega. The team of specialists will be in permanent communication, coordination and visits,” the police said in its statement.
The action, determined by the leader of the Nicaraguan regime, was seen by the opposition in exile as a disguised house arrest, given that his brother is a critic of the current dictatorship. The two family members have not spoken to each other since the 1990s, when they separated due to political differences.
Days before the “permanent care” order, the former Army chief stated in an interview with the portal Infobae that, due to the lack of successors, the regime established by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo would be weakened with the death of the dictator. Furthermore, he said that he is being persecuted by his brother, who wants to kill him.
On Monday (20), the newspaper La Prensa reported that the former officer was surrounded by the police at his home, at which time his phones and computers were confiscated and he had to report any movement to authorities controlled by the dictator Ortega.
The Nicaraguan portal Article 66 also reported that the case appears to be an attempt at house arrest for the retired general critical of the regime, with the aim of Ortega placing him under “extreme surveillance” disguised as medical care.
