Mexico City.- During the session of the Permanent Commission of Congress, accusations were exchanged between groups about blame for the fall of the Mexican peso and the instability in the Mexican Stock Exchange.
After 10 days of reactions in the financial markets due to the reform of the Judiciary, the Morena faction, supported by allied parties, blamed the opposition and its political opponents did the same.
During this Wednesday’s session, the Morena, PT and PVEM groups emphasized their position of supporting the reform of the Judiciary that seeks to elect court ministers with a popular vote, while the Opposition demanded responsibility for the reforms they want to impose in the 66th Legislature.
Morena legislators boasted the strength of the economy and that the reforms they are promoting are a demand from the voters.
When the dollar touched 19 pesos this Wednesday, Senator Mónica Fernández justified that the national currency has not been devalued as in the times of Carlos Salinas and Ernesto Zedillo.
“The depreciation of our currency and the dollar, I can say it here very clearly, in the Salinas era was minus 117 percent; with Ernesto Zedillo minus 92.4 percent; Vicente Fox, minus 12.5 percent; Felipe Calderón minus 19.9 percent ; Enrique Peña minus 51 percent.
“And the only government, the only administration that has not given negative numbers is that of our president, Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, where the currency has not been devalued, but on the contrary,” he said without mentioning the depreciation of the peso of the last days.
He assured that there is strength in the Mexican peso despite the fact that, he said, irresponsibly with criticism, they want to send signals of instability.
“They want to induce or send signals that could cause nervousness to irresponsibly, without any commitment to our country, generate instability.
“That is very serious and even so we are not falling into that. We have the strength, we have a very important base in our country that is being economically well supported. We are not held by pins, nor are we in a situation like the one that Salinas left Zedillo” , stated the Morena senator.
Meanwhile, PAN deputy Martha Estela Romo rejected blaming the opposition for the devaluation of the peso for giving their opinion on the judicial reform.
“Blaming the opposition for these economic changes and this fall in the stock market seems extremely irresponsible to me,” he responded.
He pointed out that what is irresponsible is that Morena does not assume the weight of its statements about said reform and what they generate.
“It seems more irresponsible to me that they do not assume, especially the elected authorities, among them our virtual president of the Republic, that each of their statements and each of the speculations that they put on the table, of course, generate speculation within the market “, he claimed.
The coordinator of the PAN senators, Julen Rementería, stressed that the new composition that will exist in the Chambers and the high vote in the presidential election forces Morena to be more responsible.
“It’s good that those who won won and I hope they do well now, the responsibility they acquire with the electoral result is enormous because there will be practically no counterweights, there will surely be discussions, there will be positions, but there will be no counterweights,” he said.
He cited that the current government had taken care of exchange rate parity, but now not because of the approval of the reform of the Judiciary.
He rejected the accusation that there are “Power factors” that generate volatility, without considering that there is a globalized economy.
“If we do not understand that the responsibility is going to be fundamentally in the Chambers, yes the Presidency, yes Claudia Sheinbaum who won as president; but in the end the Chambers will have to process things, and corruption will not necessarily end,” he asserted.
PRI representative Sue Ellen Bernal also warned that the majority will have a great responsibility in approving the judicial reform and stressed that a qualified majority for Morena has not been defined in the Senate, so she would have to negotiate.
“We expect responsibility. Yes, as political parties, but more as Mexicans, because we want this country to have a future, for there to be dialogue and consensus, for there to be responsibility, today is the time they have to demonstrate responsibility.
“We hope not to run into walls that do not listen, because that is not democracy, we hope that it is a real dialogue, that it really is to be able to include all the voices that have to do with it and not just a pure circus to make people believe that they are democrats.” “, he explained.
Senator Nabor Alberto Rojas assured that the voters chose for a better economy and repeated the argument that the peso was devalued in neoliberal governments.
“And with our government the currency appreciated 8.8 percent,” he said.
He highlighted that there will be an open parliament to discuss the reform of the Judiciary, proposed by Claudia Sheinbaum.
For Movimiento Ciudadano, Ruth Alejandra López also demanded responsibility from the majority to approve the reform of the Judiciary.
“Mexico deserves a political class with high vision to defend the interests of all people and reject those events that put at risk their rights and freedoms, and the institutions that protect them.
“At once we warn you, we are not going to endorse any nonsense regarding the reforms that are already circulating, we will demand that any reform that the regime tries to discuss has comprehensive studies, analysis and extensive discussions with all the sectors involved,” he said.
The PT Gerardo Fernández Noroña affirmed that they will exercise the majority that citizens gave them in Congress and that is why they will approve the reform.
The Morena deputy, Hamlet García Almaguer, assured that they will exercise the qualified majority responsibly, and that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Electoral President Claudia Sheinbaum will define the times, rhythms and content of the public discussion.
“It is not only a transition of government, but a transition in the direction of the movement, which includes, of course, all of us who support this national project,” he stated.
