Even the Hungarian Grand Prixlike most of those disputed in these first thirteen rounds of the 2022 World Cup, told a very specific story at home McLaren: on the one hand, the English team finished in the points thanks to the convincing performances of Lando Norris, 7th at the finish line after an excellent performance in qualifying, which had even placed him in the second row, in fourth position.
Conversely, the Woking team again had to contend with a lackluster performance of Daniel Ricciardowho also reached the top 10 in qualifying but slipped up to 15th place final in the race. A disappointing result, in particular, of a contact between the Australian and Lance Stroll, with a subsequent penalty imposed on number 3, now increasingly under discussion for a reconfirmation in 2023: “Unfortunately there have been more lows than highs – He admitted – the start was good, but then I dropped a bit and braked almost halfway through the first corner. I felt like I was in a decent position, but I remember that at the exit of the first corner an Alpine passed me and I had no more space. At that point I had to lift my foot, otherwise I would have lost a wing. Then, at the second corner, I went to the outside escape route, so the first lap was a bit of a mess. Then the Softs went into crisis and I no longer had anything on that tire. On the contrary, with the averages it went better, so much so that I managed to do a good one double overtaking on the Alpines: it was fun. I managed to keep Stroll at bay for a while in the mids, but when we put the Hard bikes on, we no longer had grip. I tried to avoid contact, but I couldn’t and sadly hit him. I spun him and got a penalty. Hards didn’t work for us – he concluded – I’ve never been able to get them to work. I can’t wait for the break to try to find more speed in the rest of the season ”.

Different speech for Lando Norris, already a great protagonist in qualifying with the conquest of 4th place. Despite the maximum effort, the Englishman was unable to go beyond the seventh final position, mainly due to the higher pace of the cars in front of him: “I’m happy – He admitted – after Saturday, of course we all wanted something more, but today we didn’t have the rhythm necessary to tackle the fastest cars. In the race we did a great job. I’m satisfied, it’s the best we could do today with the cars in front of us. At times it was tough, but seventh place was the best we could get for points and we were still ahead of our main rivals ”.
