The young Ducati rider Pramac amazed everyone in his MotoGP debut last year, both for his spectacular start in the first race of the season, at the Qatar Grand Prix, and, above all, for his pole position and podium in the second race, also held on the Losail circuit.
A year later, Jorge Martin has a win to his name, as well as four podiums and four pole positions, a brilliant roadmap after his first season in the premier class. With these numbers, the Spaniard has lost the surprise factor and no one is excluding him from the names to keep an eye on, especially this weekend, on a track where he has already been able to put on a show last year.
“The feeling for the start of the season is very good, but to start we shouldn’t take anything for granted because in MotoGP everything can be upside down from one day to the next,” warned the Spaniard.
This year Martín will ride a Ducati GP22, identical to that of the factory riders of the Borgo Panigale manufacturer, with whom he has a direct contract.
“The most important thing is to try to get a good start. We have a good base and I hope it works on this track. If I feel comfortable, the goal is to fight for the win, try to set a good lap time. and nothing … it’s too early to say, but I think I can fight for the victory and, above all, be able to get on the podium “.
Ambitious goals for the Spaniard, who aims to be fighting for the podium in every race. A complicated target, not only for him, in a year with so many races and so many strong riders on the grid.
“It’s difficult, of course, but we’re not going to set a very low goal, last year we were almost there, in all the races that I finished we were fighting for the podium or close to it, and when we didn’t succeed it is because we had some problems, I think I can do it, it is clear that the level is very high and there are five or six riders who can be fighting for the top three in every race, but the goal is to be among those. This is a bit like this year’s goal. “
Unlike in years past, the last two MotoGP champions didn’t need to win many races to take the title, Motorsport.com then asked Martin how many wins he thinks it will take in 2022 to become champion.
“I didn’t do the math because I don’t consider myself a title contender this year, I think my goal should be to finish fourth or fifth at the end of the season, and I think that would be a great result. I haven’t really thought about it, but I think my goal must be to get three or four wins this year, which would be ideal after a good rookie year. I think there are three or four circuits where I can do it and that’s my motivation “, concluded the boy from San Sebastián de los Reyes.
