The involvement of the social public is growing in view of the Meloni-Schlein debate on May 23rd.
The green light from Agcom arrived this evening, according to which equal treatment can be guaranteed by offering all political subjects the same opportunity for discussion. The broadcasts “can be considered legitimate where the relevant format is accepted by a large majority of the lists in electoral competition and in any case by the majority of the lists with representation in Parliament”. Any compensatory spaces for those who have to give up the format of the discussions must be organized in compliance with the principle of equal listening opportunities.
But the challenge has already begun on social media. According to data analyzed by SocialCom, between April 27 and May 14, conversations mentioning the two leaders generated over 12 million interactions.
In detail, Giorgia Meloni received 84 thousand mentions against 10 million interactions, while Elly Schlein received 15 thousand mentions and 2.2 million interactions.
Conversations about the two leaders are highly polarized. The Conversation Polarization Index, i.e. a quantitative measure that reflects the degree of divergence in the opinions expressed by users, has in fact found that conversations on Meloni are polarized at 0.70 (on a scale ranging from 0 to 1), while those on Schlein at 0.65. A homogeneous figure that reflects the complexity of the political-social framework of the country.
Meloni and Schlein seem to be enjoying the favor of their supporters: 1.9 million positive interactions for Meloni, 600 thousand for Schlein. A fact that is also reflected in the growth of the social fan base of the two leaders. In the period analyzed the prime minister saw her followers grow by 10 thousand units, while Schlein recorded an increase of 3.4 thousand fans.
The demographic data is interesting: there are more women who talk about Meloni than those who mention Schlein (33% vs 27%). Overall, therefore, the research highlights how Giorgia Meloni maintains a greater presence and involvement on social media than Elly Schlein.
Meloni is not only mentioned more, but her interactions are also much more numerous, with an increase in the fan base that reflects this trend. «Polarization will dominate the electoral scene», bets Luca Ferlaino, founder of SocialCom. «The analysis of the conversations clearly shows how the leaders are currently able to speak only to their respective electorates of reference, almost as if the real objective was to mobilize only them in view of the vote».
