A Mexican mayor was shot dead the day after the country’s presidential elections, which took place this Sunday (2).
According to the regional government of the state of Michoacán, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, municipal administrator of Cotija, was attacked in the middle of a public street by criminals who have not yet been identified by the authorities.
Sánchez had already been the victim of a kidnapping last year, when he was leaving a shopping center with two people, in a suburb of Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, located next to Michoacán. Days after the crime, the federal government announced that she had been found alive.
The district government issued a statement, condemning the criminal action and informing that it had launched a special operation to capture the killers.
The mayor was elected in 2021 to the position linked to the conservative National Action Party (PAN).
The Mexican press associated the crime with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which made constant threats to the public manager for opposing criminal activity in the city.
This year’s elections in Mexico were considered the most violent in history. During the election campaign, more than 30 candidates were killed.
