The nine ministers of the federal government declared their rejection of the “Abortion Bill” and encouraged protests on social media against the processing of the matter. This Saturday, the 15th, ministers Simone Tebet (Planning), Nísia Trindade (Health) and Margareth Menezes (Culture) completed the list of women in the 1st level of the government who oppose the project.
On the social network X, Tebet stated that “being against abortion cannot mean defending the PL against rape” and classified the project’s content as “inhumane”.
“This crusade for sensationalist agendas is just beginning, because what many want is to put an end to cases permitted by law (rape, risk to women and anencephalic people). Shout on your networks. #NO, NO and NO,” she wrote.
The Minister of Health declared on X that she follows the debate “with great concern” and called the project “unjustifiable and inhumane”.
The Minister of Culture recalled that abortion is permitted by law in cases of rape and highlighted the possibility that victims of violence will be punished with greater punishment than criminals. “We need to protect our children and women,” she wrote.
The three made the publications after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the project “insanity”, this Saturday morning, three days after the topic was discussed in the Chamber plenary. Before the PT member, six other ministers had spoken.
On June 12, Minister Cida Gonçalves (Women) said that the project imposes “more barriers to access to legal abortion”. The following day, Minister Anielle Franco (Racial Equality) wrote that the project “aggravates cases of child pregnancy”.
Minister Marina Silva (Environment), who is evangelical, also took a stand. In an interview with journalists, she criticized the “instrumentalization of highly complex topics” and said that “Brazilian women need to be respected”.
Ministers Luciana Santos (Science and Technology), Sônia Guajajara (Indigenous Peoples) and Esther Dweck (Management and Innovation) also opposed the project. Other ministers followed the criticism.
The demonstrations reinforce the federal government’s position against the decision of the Chamber of Deputies to have approved an urgent request to vote on the merits of a project that equates abortion with the crime of homicide after 22 weeks of pregnancy.
The approval of the urgency took place in a symbolic vote on Wednesday, 12th, after a meeting of leaders in which the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), signed an agreement with the evangelical bench.
With the negative repercussion, Lira said that the project will have a “center and moderate” deputy as rapporteur. According to him, the idea is to “give space to all currents that think differently”.
