Governor Luca Zaia has declared that the project for the construction of a bobsleigh track in Cortina, in the Veneto region, is proceeding
Zaia specified that the construction site is not owned by the Region and is financed by the state: “This does not mean – he said – that since I am the author of Cortina’s candidacy for the 2026 Olympics, a problem arose for me, that of signaling that a broad debate has begun which must have answers. If one hypothesizes going to Innsbruck or another country to build the bobsleigh facility as an alternative, it is right that there is clarity. So I wrote to President Malagò”.
And he added: “Having taken note that there is a dossier with the candidacy of the Cortina Olympics which provides for the construction of the bobsleigh track in Cortina, I asked Coni if there are alternative solutions of which I am not aware. I was told no, but mostly it was pointed out that going beyond national borders to organize the 2026 Olympics is not part of Italy’s objectives. With clarity, therefore, the design for the bobsleigh track goes ahead with the extraordinary commissioner Luigi Sant’Andrea, there is the demolition project of the old track and the construction of the new structure. As for resources, I would like to remind you that this construction site is not financed by the Veneto Region: it had a forecast of 55 million euros which has risen to over 80-85 million, due to the increase in the cost of raw materials which, moreover, applies to all construction sites “.
“In the balance sheet of the Olympics – concludes Zaia – we recall that the universities indicate that the event will bring over one billion to the GDP, in addition to all the effects of the works that will be done. The operation must be seen as a whole, it is an operation that will bring visibility, international standing, and at least 3 and a half billion people will see the Olympics at an international level. It will obviously lead to a new course not only for Cortina but for all of the Dolomites”.
