Director Jean-Marc Vallée, who fronted the 2013 drama Dallas buyers club, died Sunday near Quebec City, Canadahis publicist reported. The filmmaker was 58 years old.
“He was a friend, a creative partner and an older brother to me,” Nathan Ross, a partner at Vallée’s production company, Crazyrose, said in a statement to the public. “We will deeply miss the teacher, but it is comforting to know that his beautiful work and the striking style that he shared with the world will endure.”

Jean-Marc Vallée began working on Canadian music videos and film shorts, before making his feature film debut with the French film Liste noire, also known by its English title Black list.
If in doubt, his most iconic film is Dallas buyers club, a 2013 plot based on the true story of an AIDS patient who becomes a distributor of experimental treatments. Although Vallée’s direction was not recognized by the Academy, the film was nominated for best picture, while Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Oscars for their performances.
For the year 2017, Vallée made his move to television as an executive producer of the HBO drama Big little lies, a story starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. He directed the show’s first season, which cost him an Emmy. Vallée had signed a new development deal with HBO in April 2021, Deadline shared.
