Italvolt could begin to set up its electric vehicle battery production plant in the spring of 2023. This was confirmed by the company’s CEO, Lars Carlstromwhich aims to build a 45 GWh gigafactory in Scarmagno, in the province of Turin.
As reported by eeNews Europe, building permits are expected to arrive in 2023. It will be a 100 hectare site. “As this is a brownfield, it is easier to obtain permits. We will demolish 95% of the buildings already present, we will keep two for the canteen and we will make a small museum, this is the agreement. A gigafactory is very complex and difficult to design, so old buildings cannot be used. Fires and explosions can occur, so buildings need to be specific“Explained Carlstrom.
The new factory will produce MNC lithium-ion cells (nickel, manganese, cobalt) with silicon anodes, but upgrades are possible for the production of solid state drives. The plant will have over eight production lines, each with a capacity of 6 GWh. For now Italvolt will not manufacture battery packs, focusing exclusively on the cells. Italvolt has already started numerous collaborations, for example with AVL and ABB for electrification, connection to the electricity grid, automation for the plant; TÜV SÜD for the control and certification of production processes; Politecnico di Milano for studies and applications relating to new battery technologies and material recycling, a crucial topic for environmentalists.
Production will start in 2025, with the company’s goal of moving to mass production in 2027 and 2028. At full production, the factory is expected to be able to produce cells for 550,000 cars. Incidentally, earlier this year, Carlstrom announced another gigafactory, to be built in the United States. The new Statevolt company will build a factory in Imperial Valley, Southern California, with an annual capacity of 54 GWh.
