Intel is certainly not an unknown company in the industry. It is one of the leading CPU and chip manufacturers globally. The company has millions of customers and it is almost impossible not to come across a component it produces from time to time.
Either way, we’re not here today to talk to you about the company itself but of the famous 33 billion investment that has been resonating throughout Europe for a long time now. If you are curious we advise you to stay glued to your chair here, because the company has really focused a lot on this project!
Intel: 33 billion euro investment for European chips is reality!
When 33 million euros are floating around in the air, we certainly cannot remain indifferent, the news we want to bring you today concerns Europe but above all Italy, why so much money can bring jobs and new opportunities, so no more chatter and let’s start to dissect the subject!
The story we want to tell you about dates back to about a year ago, when Intel decided to instantiate around 80 billion euros over the next decade in Europe. The reason? Soon said!
Instantiate a lean, efficient ecosystem and we would dare to say essential given the period, for the sole purpose of semiconductor manufacturer (which obviously in this period are rarer than gold nuggets!)
You should certainly not expect this plan to see light overnight, but certainly thanks to the help of many nations it is an achievable goal that will not see major obstacles. Pat Gelsinger, CEO of the company, strongly believes in this investment as he was keen to underline:
“These investments are an important step for both Intel and Europe. The EU Chips Act will allow private companies and especially governments to work together to dramatically advance Europe’s position in the semiconductor sector. “
In short, an important milestone. In detail, however, the time has come to dissect what the initial 33 billion euros will be used for: the first 17 billion euros used for the construction of a super plant for the production of semiconductors located in Magdeburg, Germany.
Construction will start in mid 2023 and finish at the end of 2027.
A new research and development center in France will follow. It will come to life on Plateau de Saclay and give the green light to 1,000 new jobs (450 by 2024). Intel he has big plans for the nation in question, as he wants to make it the European headquarters of Intel dedicated to HPC (high performance computing) and artificial intelligence.
The remaining amount, it will be devoted to research and development and semiconductor manufacturing operations in Ireland, Italy, Poland and Spain.
Then there is an additional € 12 billion to expand the Leixlip (Ireland) plant. There is talk of a doubling of the space allocated to production and of bringing technology based on the Intel 4 process (formerly 7 nanometers) to Europe.
Finally, let’s talk about Italy with 4.5 billion euros on the table. The goal is visionary, that is, a chip manufacturing plant that could employ around 1,500 employees directly hired by Intel and if that’s not enough for you, we will relaunch with another 3,500 jobs thanks to the network of partners and suppliers.
It is estimated that the plant will be operational between 2025 and 2027. Do not think that our State is considered by the company as the last wheel of the wagon as the idea is to build a factory that is a model in Europe thanks to the use of innovative technologies. The link between Intel and Italy will certainly be destined to increase!
As you have surely seen for yourself the ideas are on the table, but this project will take a long time. There is talk of 2027 as an intermission date so let’s sit calmly and hope that everything goes the right way! For the moment we just have to give you an appointment at the next article!
