In Europe we joke with the word “war”. What is missing is a statesman à la Craxi
In this last period, in which the clouds are gathering ever thicker over the skies of Europe, Bettino Craxi often comes to mind, a courageous and enlightened statesman who loved his country and always worked so that Italy had the place it deserved. his role as leader of peace and cooperation in the Mediterranean. He made a mistake who in the 90s did not realize the importance of the politician and statesman. It was he who was the first, in unsuspecting times, to anticipate the need for a change of pace in the European treaties, which, as they were thought, would first lead Italy to a profound economic and social crisis and then the European Union itself to one critical stalemate due to its atavistic contradictions.
Today I am convinced that Craxi himself would be on the front line to warn us of the dangers of war escalation in Europe and the Middle East. For a long time now, a clearing of war as a resolution of conflicts between nations has been dangerously making room, without finding any obstacle, an option very far from our traditions and which we should always remember is clearly contrary to our constitutional principles. I wonder where the pacifists, the girotondi, the sardines, the purple and orange people have gone. Can peace be defended and affirmed only if it is a useful exploitation against the political opponent of the moment or is it a timeless universal principle that must always be defended?
The European media and cultural establishment are rightly outraged by the misdeeds of the current “bad guys”, by the abuses carried out in contempt of democracy and freedom, but they do so with increasingly aggressive language and tone. This climate in which there are those who draw up the list of good and bad people to be punished is very dangerous and will not bring anything good. Peace seems to have disappeared from the radar. Yet today more than ever we need peace to guarantee a future for our children and grandchildren for whom we have prepared a world full of uncertainties and difficulties that we have not yet resolved. This is what we should commit all our resources to, not to stuff armies with sophisticated and lethal weapons that can only result in bringing pain and destruction.
If we think about even the most critical events of the last 80 years, we realize that after the period of the “Cold War” the risk of a world conflict has never been as high as it is today and the destructive prospect of such a scenario could have apocalyptic effects. Psychologists and sociologists have long explained to parents that only through example can real educational progress be achieved for their children. Governments, peoples and nations should use the same example. Nobody is perfect and only those who recognize this, even if they are in a position of moral advantage, will be able to say they are victorious. Let us therefore start from this awareness because it is only by honestly looking at our own limits that we can induce our interlocutors to do the same.
Those who have great responsibilities should know that things taken for granted sooner or later die. A plant dies if you don't feed it, a friendship dies if you don't cultivate it, a love you get used to dies. Peace also dies for the same reasons. Italy can play a fundamental role in achieving a new world balance based on peace and prosperity, but it must find the courage, as Craxi had in the 1980s. Affirming one's independence of judgment and one's sovereignty, doing so as a function of cooperation and peace between peoples, is the only way forward to safeguard everything that we hold dear and that we should not take for granted.
