Hungary, owned by conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, announced this Tuesday (18) the slogan for its presidency of the European Council, one of the institutions of the European Union: “Make Europe Great Again”.
The catchphrase is inspired by the slogan of Donald Trump’s first presidential campaign in the United States, in 2016 (“Make America Great Again”) – the Republican used the motto in this year’s race for the White House.
“It is a reference to an active presidency,” said Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs, János Bóka, according to information from the Politico website.
“In fact, it shows and manifests the expectation that together we will be stronger than we are individually, but that we must be able to remain who we are when we are together. It also portrays the idea that Europe is capable of becoming an independent global actor in our changing world,” she added.
Trump is a great friend of Orbán, who visited him at his Florida residence in March.
Earlier this month, before the European Parliament elections, Hungary’s prime minister had declared that only a victory for the nationalist right (the center-right EPP coalition received the most votes, but groups on the nationalist right won several seats) and then A Trump triumph in the US presidential election in November could end the war in Ukraine.
The presidency of the European Council rotates between EU member countries and Hungary’s will be from July to December this year.
