With Red Bull finally able to hold up the challenge with Mercedes to the end, the 2021 season has probably been the most intriguing in several years for Formula 1.
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are separated by just eight points when the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi are just missing.
After the incidents at Silverstone and Monza, followed by another close contact in Brazil, 1996 world champion Damon Hill said he hopes they will both play fair in these last two rounds.
“I think it would be sad for F1,” he said when asked about his thoughts on a possible accident between the two. “I feel like they have some sort of obligation to be sporty, I think.”
“It would be nice if it were resolved, not amicably, but certainly more for a satisfaction than … I would like to close with the feeling that it was a great championship, closely fought by two worthy opponents, and that in the end the rider won. and the best team. Nobody wants it to depend on other things. “

Hill had a direct experience of this kind of talk when he was at Williams, as in Adelaide in 1994 he was thrown out of Michael Schumacher’s Benetton in the race that then awarded the German the first of his seven world titles.
The former British driver believes that it would be difficult to review such a maneuver in Abu Dhabi, but he also added that perhaps the FIA should establish clear boundaries in this sense before the decisive appointment.
“Let’s say that Max is in the lead and you get to a wheel to wheel. It is very difficult for a rider to resist the temptation to defend himself aggressively,” he explained.
“I think the point is how you can go about avoiding a final of this kind. We have already had enough of championships decided in this controversial way. And it would be really unsatisfactory if it were to happen again.”
“Maybe some kind of clear indication, like that there could be a point penalty if there was a deliberate confrontation. That might be the only way to prevent something like this from happening.”
