We are already practically halfway through the month of March 2024 and, contrary to what had been announced at the end of December 2023 by the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) of the Chamber of Deputiesthe reform of the Federal Labor Law (LFT) for the reduction of the working day from 48 hours to 40 hours in Mexico.
Under this understanding, in recent days federal deputies, both from the PRI as well as Morena himselfparliamentary group that proposed labor reform to give workers two days of rest a week, They have accused the Morenista leaders in the lower house of the Congress of the Union of having stopped the debate on the new work week proposal.

In this sense, the coordinator of the federal deputies of the PRI, Rubén Moreira revealed that Mexican businessmen told him that the reform to the Federal Labor Law (LFT) for the reduction of the work week will not be voted on in the Federal Legislative Branch, who obtained this information after meeting in a “very important place”.
“I was with some businessmen and they told me that they had been somewhere very important and that they had been told that they were not going to vote. “It seems that the oligarchy makes Morena jump rope so as not to move the ruling,” said the legislator of the lower house of the Congress of the Union in his intervention in the virtual program “Con Peras, Manzanas y Naranjas.”
For its part, we must not ignore the fact that in recent days the promoter of the reform for the 40-hour work day, the Morena deputy Susana Prieto, announced her break with the Morena bench in the lower house, after pointing out a lack of commitment from the legislators of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's party to the initiative that she presented for months for the benefit of Mexican workers.
It was in this way that Prieto maintained that, despite the fact that she has received insults on social networks for promoting the reform to reduce the work week to 40 hours, everything seems to indicate that this proposal to give employees two days of rest will not be voted on. in March of this 2024, as the Political Coordination Board had announced (Jucopo) of the lower house of the Congress of the Union in December 2023.
However, the federal representative assured that she will continue promoting the reform to have a reduced working day, although she will continue the legislative path independently.
For its part, in addition to the postponement of the discussion of the LFT reform initiative, the private initiative has expressed its concern about the legislative proposals that, in their opinion, would end up harming micro, small and medium-sized companies. This has been considered by business organizations such as the Mexican Business Council (EMC) and the National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra).
In this vein, the Mexican Business Council (CEM) has maintained that the Labor reforms such as the reduction of the work week and the one that proposes giving double bonuses to workers are “irresponsible” and “illusory” actions, emphasizing that they demonstrate that the federal government does not take into account the consequences of its actions.s.
“Everything is based on a better labor relationship between employers and workers, the design of a mechanism aimed at productivity at work and healthy economic activity in companies, under favorable conditions within the legal and security framework that the government must guarantee, to generate resources that benefit its workers, then it is not a simple matter,” said the organization of chambers and private associations.
On the other hand, the National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra) emphasized the fact that it is worrying that the federal government continues to burden the business sector with labor reform proposals while productivity remains stagnant.
“In principle, we find it inconvenient to continue increasing costs to generation
of jobs at a time of economic complexity for the country and in which there is
assimilating a consistent increase in the minimum wage,” is indicated in the statement published by the Canacintra of Ensenada.
Finally, we must not leave aside that other organizations, such as the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) and the Employers' Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) have already pointed out that the 40-hour work day would have negative consequences for small business owners and workers, causing, in many cases, mass layoffs and business closures.
However, it must be remembered that these considerations were already presented in the open parliament held in October and November 2023 by the Chamber of Deputies, considerations that will be added to the new ruling on the reform of the LFT.
