It was not an easy Sprint for Lewis Hamilton. In truth, Spielberg’s entire weekend took a bad turn for the Brit, considering yesterday’s incident at Würth that cost him Q3. Starting from ninth place, Sir Lewis managed to gain only one position in the first 100 km of the long Austrian weekend. Blame for the accident he had at the start with Pierre Gasly: the Mercedes driver in fact found himself in the middle of a sandwich of cars, with the Frenchman who cut his way and after the contact he got the worst of it, ending up on the escape route. Hamilton at least managed to keep the car on track, but slipped to 11th place and had to rebuild his Sprint with a comeback made difficult by the damage that the accident with Gasly caused.
“I am grateful to the team for being back on track today. The team did a great job getting the car back in place last night and this morning. I thank them and I am happy to have brought it back almost entirely. I didn’t get a good start, then Pierre touched me at the first cornerSir Lewis told Mercedes channels. “I don’t understand why the riders have this behavior when there is so much space to the right, and then the same thing happened at the third corner with a Williams and a Red Bull. I personally couldn’t do anything to avoid contact: I also reported some damage, but at least I was able to continue the Sprint. After this difficult first lap, I tried to recover. We are slower on the straights, so I had to wait until I was off the DRS train to overtake the cars in front (so it happened with Schumacher for example, ed.). For this it took a few laps to get ahead of Mick. Let’s hope we can go faster tomorrow, fingers crossed!“.
