Deputies allied with Lula said that the event was reduced and criticized praise for businessman Elon Musk; the president did not speak
Government supporters minimize the act called by the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) held in Copacabana, Rio, this Sunday (April 21, 2024). Despite comments, the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) did not speak out until Sunday night, as did his state ministers.
It was up to the president of the PT (Workers' Party), the federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmannmake the most scathing criticisms against the act which, according to a survey of Power360had between 40,000 and 45,000 people.
The deputy said that the event “opens wide” the alignment of Bolsonaro supporters and businessman Elon Musk. The owner of X has been involved in a series of clashes with the minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), Alexandre de Moraes.
“Cowardly as always, the ineligible continues to outsource attacks, increasingly insolent, to the so-called [Silas] Malafaia. The freedom of expression they want is to continue lying and undermining democratic institutions”, he said on his profile on X.
The federal deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ) also called Bolsonaro a coward and stated that he “didn't have the courage to talk about Alexandre de Moraes”. He also said that the attacks were carried out by pastor Silas Malafaia, who paid for the event in Rio and the one in São Paulo on February 25.
Farias said that the evangelical's speech was a provocation to the military, since he called for the resignation of the 3 commanders of the Armed Forces and criticized the arrest of Bolsonaro's former aide-de-camp, Mauro Cid.
“This act shows that they will try to continue creating a climate to intimidate the Supreme Court and prevent a free investigation. This is reason for preventive detention, it is a decision of the Supreme Court, but I think that if they do not detain Bolsonaro, they will continue this narrative and this attack on democracy the entire time.”.
Bolsonaro is a coward. In today's act, he outsourced the attacks on the Supreme Court to Malafaia. The act was an obvious attempt to intimidate the STF and, as I have already argued, Bolsonaro's preventive arrest is urgent. He will not stop attacking our democracy. The government leader in the Chamber, José Guimarães (PT-CE), minimized the participation of protesters in Sunday's act. He said the act would have been “much smaller than expected” and that this shows that “The Brazilian people are committed to democracy”.
“His 'freedom' and 'democracy' speech is not misleading: the people recognize the threats he poses against these fundamental values”, he said in a publication on X.
The deputy leader, the deputy Rogério Correia (PT-MG), said that the act “flopped” and that Bolsonaro’s arrest “is getting closer and closer”. He also provoked the federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), who said that Brazil needs men with “testosterone like Bolsonaro”.
“More testosterone in Papuda soon, right Nicholas? (sic) And there's more estrogen in the hive, right Michelle?”, said the congressman on his profile on X.
The federal deputy Jandira Feghali (Psol-RJ) mocked an excerpt from the speech Bolsonaro, who said that “you can have a more competent president than me”, in his speech.
“Bolsonaro is right: we have a president MUCH MORE COMPETENT than him”, he declared in the post on the social network.

At the same time, President Lula and the first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, did not speak publicly about the act in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Instead, she published a video in which she and her husband stroll through Alvorada.
