New York will host the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in January, in which the US does not participate. Washington and Moscow only keep the New Start Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in force
The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, advocated on Tuesday to reach new international agreements quickly to reduce the number of nuclear weapons, treaties from which, for one reason or another, the main powers have been withdrawing in war arsenals.
“Nuclear disarmament urgently needs a new impetus,” said the German minister shortly before traveling to Stockholm, the Swedish capital, where she will participate in a conference on nuclear disarmament.
The Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, to be held in January in New York City, will follow up on the efforts and measures raised by the participants of the summit to be held this day. “That nuclear weapons are never used again is the joint responsibility of the entire international community,” said Annalena Baerbock. However, he recalled that the current situation has deteriorated, which has prevented reaching agreements on this matter in recent years.
Baerbock stressed the need for the New York conference to move towards the goal of a world without nuclear weapons: “We cannot afford another review conference without tangible results.”
The United States has withdrawn from several disarmament agreements and has accused Russia of breaking the rules. Among them is the Treaty on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) on the prohibition of medium-range ground-based nuclear weapons. However, Moscow has rejected the accusations and warned that a withdrawal from the agreements could lead to an arms race.
The only major arms control agreement left between the United States and Russia is the New Start Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. It limits both countries’ arsenals to 800 launch systems and 1,550 deployable warheads, respectively.
