France|The demonstrations were peaceful, except for a few incidents.
Almost A quarter of a million people took part in anti-extremist demonstrations across France on Saturday, police estimated.
The success of the far-right in the recent European elections was due to the president Emmanuel Macron to dissolve the parliament and declare early elections in the country.
The CGT union’s estimate of the number of participants was significantly higher than the police, about 640,000 people in more than 180 demonstrations.
“I thought I would never see the far right come to power, and now it can happen,” commented a participant in the demonstration in Paris Florence David60.
Almost all protests were peaceful, except for a few incidents in Rennes and Nantes, where police used tear gas against far-left demonstrators. There were also minor incidents in Paris.
