European Football Championships | Two minutes on the pitch and then the net rang – the super substitute became a Dutch hero

Netherlands scored a 2–1 victory over Poland in the opening match of the first group D of the European football final tournament in Hamburg on Sunday.

Finished the winning goal in the 83rd minute Wout Weghorstwho had entered the field only two minutes before.

The 31-year-old top man Weghorst is a real weapon for the orange shirts. He has scored seven of his last nine international goals as a substitute.

Weghorst’s power has been amazing in the honor races: the last three shots have brought three goals. He struck twice against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.

Without their injured superstar Robert Lewandowski Poland took the lead in the opening half Adam Buksa with a goal in the 16th minute, but Cody Gakpo equalized 13 minutes later after a shot bounced past the goalkeeper through a Polish defender Wojciech Szczesny.

“The game should have been 4-1 for us after an hour, we played well, but we couldn’t finish. Poland also had their share of goals, but we were lucky and scored the second goal. The whole team played well. Cody Gakpo was very good and we should get him the ball more,” the Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman told the BBC.

Block the second match of the opening round between Austria and France will be played on Monday. On Friday, the awaited top game of the group will be played, when France, one of the biggest champion favorites, will take on Holland.
