The Ecuadorian Ministry of the Interior announced, this Monday (22), the recapture of Fabricio Colón Pico Suárez, one of the leaders of the Los Lobos faction who had escaped from prison three months ago and threatened the country's attorney general, Diana Salazar, of death. Along with him, two other criminals who fled with Pico were arrested at the same time, the attorney general's office said.
The public body confirmed the arrest on its official X profile (formerly Twitter). “The @PoliciaEcuador in coordination with @FiscaliaEcuador has just captured #ColónPico in a sector of #PuertoQuito”, a small town northwest of the capital, it reported.
The criminal, better known as “Captain Pico”, escaped from a prison in Riobamba, in the central region of the country, in January, during a drug trafficking attack in response to the decree of a state of emergency by President Daniel Noboa. The violent action left around twenty people dead at the time.
Ecuadorian authorities arrested Pico in early January, accused of planning the kidnapping and murder of Salazar, who supported the measures adopted in the country to combat drug trafficking gangs. She was also responsible for discovering and exposing factions' links with politicians, judges and state entities.
This weekend, Ecuadorians confirmed their support for Noboa at the polls, during the vote on a referendum that seeks to change legislation aimed at adding a series of security measures to combat violence and gang activity in the country.
