While Duke Nukem Forever being released in 2011 after being taken over by Gearbox, it did not receive a warm reception. After prolonged development, it still looked rushed, unfinished, outdated and behind the “modern” trends in FPS.
Reportedly, the reason it took so long is that 3D Realms has discarded multiple versions of the game, so it’s understandable that getting hold of one of these early versions has become something of a holy grail for fans, in particularly the 2001 build with the Unreal 1 engine, on which the E3 trailer was based. Some leakers have therefore published the original version complete with videos and screenshots on the net.
The leakers also claim that every chapter of the game is present but it is by no means a complete game, even if a huge part of it is playable. Not only that, but they have announced that they will publicly release the build next month.

Via Duke4.net, a leaker named “x0r” uploaded gameplay images and footage to 4Chan, claiming they were from Duke Nukem Forever’s 2001 E3 build. Since the leak was announced George Broussard, creator of Duke Nukem and project manager for most of the development of Forever, confirmed on Twitter that the footage is indeed real, although he also says that he is not particularly excited about having to go back to those periods of troubled development.
