The weekend of Italian Grand Prix it hadn’t started under the best auspices for the Williamsforced to give up Alex Albon for an attack of appendicitis suffered by the latter before Saturday. However, with the participation of Nyck de Vries in PL1 at the wheel of Aston Martin, the Grove team called up the Dutch driver as a replacement for the Anglo-Thai for qualifying and the race. A choice that has had its fruits with immediate effect.
The third driver of Mercedes, Formula E world champion in 2020/21, after starting from eighth place on the starting grid – due to the numerous penalties of others – maintained a placement in the top ten until the flag was displayed checkered, thus ending in ninth position. A result that is also equivalent to Williams best result in this championship, previously reached by Albon in Imola. A great debut for the 27-year-old, however exhausted at the end of the race, so much so that he asked his team in Parco Chiuso to help him get out of the caras well as remarking in the radio team to have ‘dead shoulders’ for physical exertion: “I feel very good today and I think it was essential to start well and do a clean lap on the first lap – commented – I got into a train of cars with open DRS which helped me stay in the group, but I believe the pace was really good and that we have made a good choice of strategy and tire management. The title of driver of the day makes me very happy and I am very much happy and grateful to have had this opportunity and to have jumped at it. It was a great day for the team and although the penalties on the grid worked in our favor, in the end we had a great race, so I am very happy for all members of the team and for myself. I hope to have a chance next year, but this is definitely a dream come true and I am very impressed with what we have done in a short time, so now I am going to enjoy it ”.

Different speech, however, for Nicholas Latifi: the Canadian, despite having started from tenth position on the grid, was unable to keep up with the pace as his ‘new’ teammate, to the point of finishing in the 15th place: “A very tough race – commented – at the start everything was compromised by the fact that I found myself in the middle of some cars and tried to avoid damage. Many cars cut through the first corner without being penalized. Unfortunately, we made a slow pit stop which left us little to play in the race. The goal was to keep the starting position and we had a chance to fight, but it wasn’t meant to be. We were fast on the straight, but we struggled under braking and to maintain speed in the corners. We will try to recover in Singapore in a few weeks ”.
