The Prime Minister of Denmark, the social democrat Mette Frederiksen, was attacked this Friday (7), amid a wave of violence against politicians in Europe as elections for the European Parliament are being held.
According to information from Danish broadcaster TV2, Frederiksen had just left the newsroom of a magazine in Copenhagen, where she had given an interview, when she was attacked. A man suspected of the attack was arrested. His name was not disclosed.
Frederiksen said she was “shocked” but made no further comment, TV2 said. No further details were provided about the prime minister’s health status.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke on X about the incident. “I wish you [a Frederiksen] strength and courage – I know you have plenty of both,” he said.
Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen wrote on the same social network that “this is not Denmark”. “We don’t attack our prime ministers. I send my best thoughts to Mette,” he stated. The election for the European Parliament in Denmark will be held on Sunday (9).
On Tuesday (4), Heinrich Koch, 62, candidate for the right-wing nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD), was the victim of a knife attack in the city of Mannheim.
In May, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, the left-wing populist Robert Fico, was the target of a shooting attack. He was hospitalized, underwent surgery and recovered.
