The Lapland hospital district’s decision to give fourth vaccinations to social security personnel, deviating from THL’s recommendations, is exceptional and surprising, says manager Otto Helve from THL.
Lapland the hospital district’s decision to recommend the fourth doses of corona vaccinations for social security personnel, contrary to the recommendations of the Institute of Health and Welfare (THL), came as a complete surprise at the institution.
“Basically, this has been a surprising situation, exceptional. I got to know [Lapin sairaanhoitopiirin] for a recommendation from the news,” says the manager Otto Helve from the health security department.
Lapland’s hospital district said on Tuesday that it recommends the fourth corona vaccination for the social and healthcare staff. The justification is, among other things, that the vaccine reduces the incidence of corona disease.
The hospital district said that it had negotiated with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM) about issuing a recommendation. THL operates in STM’s administration.

THL recommends fourth doses for basic healthy people aged 60–64 years. Booster doses are recommended for people older than this and certain groups. The mutual difference between the recommendations is that the boost dose can be given even to someone who has had the corona disease.
In Finland, there has also been a public discussion about expanding the vaccine recommendation.
Helve points out that THL’s recommendation is not binding.
“Fundamentally contradictory recommendations are always problematic, however. It would be good to have a discussion before different recommendations are made. It’s good if the grounds for why you want to make a different kind of recommendation are presented in advance.”
Helve also commented in general that the staff involved in vaccination are always away somewhere. In Lapland, the aim is to administer the corona vaccination at the same time as the flu vaccination.
Other for example, from the point of view of the adequacy of resources, it would make sense that if Finland wanted to start a wider corona vaccination than at present, the decision would be made now. Free flu vaccination starts in November.
Does Helve believe that Lapland’s hospital district’s decision on the eve of the start of free flu vaccination will create pressure to expand the current corona vaccination recommendation for social security personnel?
“We base our recommendations on epidemiological and immunological evaluations and the process of assessing the benefits and harms of vaccines.”
THL therefore sees no need to change the recommendation.
About politicians the minister of family and basic services is profiled in corona treatment Krista Kiuru (sd). After returning as minister at the beginning of October, Kiuru stated that the vaccination situation could be better. At the same time, he hoped, as a “citizen” in the ministerial information, that THL would clarify the instructions very quickly.
“
“The work must also be started in Finland as soon as possible.”
On Tuesday, Kiuru stated in an email to Helsingin Sanomat that “I think it’s good that in Lapland we’re getting started now, and the vaccine is being offered to workers in the health and social care sector who are willing.”
“Sote personnel are vaccinated in other EU countries. Vaccinations aim to secure the capacity of the hospital and, of course, to reduce the risk of staff and patients getting sick. For this reason, the work must also be started in Finland as soon as possible,” Kiuru stated.
Hell according to the new doses are currently recommended for those who benefit from them. Protection against serious disease is good with the recommended doses, Helve points out. Recommendations are evaluated and updated based on increasing national and international information, he adds.
In addition, there are still details related to corona vaccines, the research data of which are still awaited.
“In the case of SOTE professionals, there is not enough information about the protective effect of variant vaccines against infections and contagiousness.”
In Finland, variant vaccines are also used as fourth doses and booster vaccinations.
