Political scientist Zhuravlev predicted Ukraine would have a problem with goods due to default
A default in Ukraine will lead to a sharp rise in prices for imported goods, political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev warned in a conversation with Lenta.ru. At the same time, from the point of view of global foreign policy and foreign policy processes, he believes that nothing will change.
“Nobody takes hryvnia anyway, otherwise it will finally cease to be at least somewhat significant currency. But for a country that lives on the brink of economic disaster, that has invested everything in the war, there is not much difference here. Another thing is that you can’t stay in this state indefinitely,” the political scientist noted.
Within the country, according to Zhuravlev, the consequences will be more noticeable. In particular, import prices will rise significantly due to the fact that there will be problems with currency for purchases.
“The supply of weapons and ammunition will continue conditionally free of charge, but problems will begin with goods: you can’t buy anything for the hryvnia, and no one will give you currency with an outstanding debt. There is only Ukrainian grain for sale, but it cannot be sold in Europe. High-tech products went to war, and the coal and steel that the country produces are expensive and of poor quality,” said Lenta.ru’s interlocutor.
Earlier, the former head of the Ukrainian government Mykola Azarov said that Ukraine would not be able to pay off its debts on its own without outside help. It could face default due to its debt load as early as August.
