Chavismo, the political force that controls the National Assembly, the Parliament of Venezuela, wants to penalize deputy Bruno Gallo for making a strong statement this Tuesday (21) in defense of Iranian women.
Gallo’s position came at a time when Venezuelan parliamentarians were discussing voting on a project to show solidarity with Iran over the death of Ebrahim Raisi, the president who died in a helicopter crash on Sunday (19).
Gallo, who says he is an opponent, but is labeled by the main dissidents of Chavismo as one of the parliamentarians who support the Caracas regime, asked to speak during the discussion of the project and said that, “from a human point of view, we regret the death of anyone”, however, “at this moment I would like to pay a solidarity tribute to the women who do not cover their heads, to the women who do not lower their gaze, to the women who want to study, to the women who want to be equal” in Iran.
Gallo’s words were considered by Chavista deputy Jorge Rodríguez, who presides over the Venezuelan Parliament, as “rude, inappropriate, inappropriate” and “absolutely devoid of solidarity” with Iran, a country that is a strong ally of Venezuela.
Rodríguez asked for the deputy’s words to be removed from the minutes of the session, but he did not limit himself to that alone, he indicated that Parliament “reserves” the right to apply “sanctions corresponding to the deputy’s speaking rights”, based on the rules of the Assembly’s debate regulations. The measure was seen as an attempt by Chavismo to silence dissonant voices and control the narrative within the legislative body.
Under Raisi’s command, repression in Iran intensified against critics, activists and journalists, and especially against women who decided to defy the mandatory wearing of the veil. In 2022, this oppression triggered one of the largest protests against the Islamic regime in years, resulting in 500 deaths.
