The award already existed, but was named after the PL deputy, who died at the age of 39 on May 12, 2024
The 2nd Secretariat of the Chamber of Deputies opened on the 2nd (May 20, 2024) the deadline for nominations to the Brazil More Inclusion Award Deputy Amália Barros 2024. The award, given every year, honors companies, federated entities (Union, states, Federal District and municipalities), entities or individuals who have carried out actions in favor of the inclusion of people with disabilities or are, themselves, examples of life and overcoming. .
On May 15, the Chamber of Deputies approved a resolution that from the the name of the deputy for the award. Barros died on May 12, aged 39. She had been admitted to the Vila Nova Star hospital, in São Paulo, on May 1st to have a nodule removed from her pancreas, but had complications after surgery.

Each deputy and senator can nominate 1 candidate until May 31st. Registrations can be made here.
The award is made up of two categories:
- Merit João Ribas – granted to public or private companies, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations of public interest;
- Merit Darci Barbosa – granted to personalities and federated entities.
The award is part of the Chamber’s actions to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities.
WINNERS AND AWARDS
This year’s winners will be announced on June 19th. The award ceremony is scheduled for November 27th.
AMÁLIA BARROS
Amalia Scudeler de Barros Santos was born on March 22, 1985, in Mogi Mirim (SP). She lost vision in her left eye at age 20 due to an infection. She had her eyeball removed in 2016 and started using an ocular prosthetic. Her story would have inspired The Law No. 14,126/2021which classifies monocular vision as a sensory disability.
The deputy was in her 1st term. She had been elected federal deputy for Mato Grosso in 2022, with 70,294 votes. She also served as vice-president of PL Mulher.
