WIf the police's fears come true, such a situation could occur more frequently in the future: A police patrol checks a person in the train station district who they assign to the dealer scene and finds 25 grams of cannabis. According to the current law, a “not a small amount”. But it is the amount that anyone over the age of 18 can legally carry from April 1st. And then happens: nothing. Naturally, criminal prosecution is then no longer possible – and the question of where the person got the drug from, whether from their own cultivation or from illegal sources, has not yet been clarified.
The law legalizing cannabis, which was passed in the Bundestag on Friday, is highly controversial in the police and judiciary. Especially in cities like Frankfurt, where there are already a lot of drugs in circulation, there is an effort that is difficult to manage, says the chairman of the Association of German Criminal Police Officers, Dirk Peglow. Because the permitted amount must be controlled. Peglow even fears that the black market will strengthen, among other things because it cannot be distinguished whether the cannabis comes from legal or illegal production.
