One safety vest is not the same as the other. So it turns out again! The ANWB warns against a bad vest
Whether you are going to winter sports, summer holidays, visiting family or whatever. There is a good chance that you will cross the border by car at some point. The Netherlands does not really have strict rules for cars. A valid MOT and active car insurance and you're pretty much there. That's different across the border.
Vignettes, toll booths, safety measures, winter tires. Good preparation is half the job. And yet it is sometimes surprising how Dutch people cross the border without any know-how.
In the Netherlands it is not necessary, but in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain and Croatia, among others, it is mandatory to have a reflective vest in the car. Definitely wise to have with you, also in the Netherlands. Such a vest helps increase your visibility in case you have a breakdown along the road. Because NO, you don't wait in the car on the hard shoulder for help, you smart guys.
One safety vest is not the same as the other. This is evident from research by the ANWB and ADAC. The organizations have done an extensive test. 14 different vests were purchased online and tested for reflection. The whole idea behind such a vest is visibility, so it is nice if it reflects well.
As it turns out, there are big differences in vests. Of the 14 vests tested, 35 percent turned out to be unsafe. In other words, 5 out of 14 failed the test. Some of them were virtually non-reflective, meaning that another driver could not see you in the dark. Even if you are wearing such a nice vest and someone else is shining on you with poorly adjusted headlights.
For good reflection, the safety vest must meet the European standard EN ISO 20471. If you buy a vest for the car, it is a good idea to test it in the store. Shine your smartphone flashlight on it to see if it reflects well. If you buy a vest online, it is good to check whether the seller refers to the EN ISO 20471 standard. This standard can also be found on a label in the vest.
