Making video games is hard. There are so many details to take into consideration, both from a technological point of view and from an artistic point of view. You have to calculate every detail carefully, especially when choosing colors. For example, a bug could make it difficult for players to see certain elements of the video game, or it could make you break the Geneva Convention. This is what happened to Among Us.
As revealed by the authors of the game through the official Among Us Twitter profile, until 2020 – i.e. before its success – Among Us included a red cross inside the Medbay. The problem is that it is a symbol protected by the Geneva Convention and should not be used.
The team had no idea and only after the success did someone realize it and report it to the developers, who made the Among Us Medbay cross blue. This is obviously a small mistake and there are no real consequences, but as a rule people try not to become war criminals, so the team has diligently made the change.
You can also see via Twitter that various other developers have reported running into this issue. Many QA testers they know that there must be no red crosses in the games and they must report it to the developers. It also seems to have happened to well-known games such as Super Meat Boy and Prison Architect.
Really, indie publisher No More Robots would have failed the certification phase on consoles of three different games precisely due to the fact that they included a red cross. In other words, this is a very common mistake.
