Here are the reasons for the historical choice
A historic decision that has already been around the world, to the delight of all animal rights activists and associations in defense of animals. There whaling will be prohibited in Iceland. Starting from 2024in fact, it will be outlawed to kill these splendid marine animals for meat to eat. What were the reasons for this choice that we have all been waiting for for a long time?
In a couple of years Iceland will stop whaling, today one of the three countries in the world where the practice is legal and not illegal: the other two countries are Japan and Norway. The choice was made by the Icelandic Minister of Fisheries, the green Svandis Svavarsdottir.
Apparently in the country of north of Europe whaling would no longer be profitable as the demand for whale meat dropped dramatically. So for the country it no longer makes sense, from an economic point of view, to continue with a practice that has very little ethics.
There is little reason left to authorize whaling beyond 2024. Why should Iceland continue a business that no longer brings any financial gain, to sell a product for which there is hardly any demand?
Minister Svandis Svavarsdottir, in the newspaper Morgunbladid, explained that in the last three years only one whale has been killed. Therefore, the practice is not widespread in Iceland and the economic benefits for the country are practically nil.
The island, which is located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, has established that until the end of 2023 it will be possible to continue with the whalingbut from 1 January 2024 it will be absolutely forbidden to kill them to eat them.
Whaling prohibited in Iceland: what the law says today
According to the law currently in force, 209 fin whales, considered endangered, and 217 minke whales, smaller than the previous ones, can be killed in Iceland.
But fewer and fewer of them are hunted and this custom has a negative impact also from the point of view of the image of the island, given that all over the world it is considered a barbaric custom.
