When “Russia’s senseless war began, Ukraine was a free country. It still is today. And the war will end with Ukraine remaining a free, sovereign and independent country.” This is what was said by US President Joe Bidenwho announced on the eve of Ukrainian Independence Day that he had held a meeting with his counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky“to reaffirm this message and express America’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.”
The Ukrainians, Biden continued, for two and a half years have repelled “Russia’s vicious onslaught” and recaptured more than half the territory that Russian forces had occupied in the early days of the war. “They have stood firm in the face of Russia’s war crimes and heinous atrocities,” Biden continued. “And day after day, they have defended the values that unite people in both our nations and around the world, including independence.”
Missiles and anti-drone equipment for Kiev from the USA
The US president then said he was “proud” of a new military aid package for Ukraine that includes air defense missiles to protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, anti-drone equipment and ammunition to defend front-line soldiers. “We are also imposing new sanctions on nearly 400 entities and individuals who are enabling Russia’s illegal war,” Biden added, concluding by assuring that “Russia will not prevail in this conflict. The independent people of Ukraine will prevail, and the United States, our allies and partners will continue to support them every step of the way.”
“The United States is sending a new package of urgently needed weapons and equipment to support Ukraine’s military forces in defending themselves from Russia’s ongoing attacks. This support will help Ukraine protect its troops, its people, and strengthen its capabilities on the front lines,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
Zelensky: “Urgent delivery of weapons”
“I welcomed the new US military aid package and stressed that Ukraine urgently requires the delivery of weapons from the announced packages, in particular additional air defense systems, to reliably protect our cities, communities and critical infrastructure,” the Ukrainian president later wrote on social media X, reporting on the conversation with the head of the White House.
“The Ukrainian people are grateful to President Biden, his Administration, Congress and the entire American people for their unwavering support,” Zelensky continued, adding that he also thanked Biden for the new sanctions against Russia.
