Trump, Biden Threatens Democracy and Existence of the US
“Joe Biden is a threat to democracy and a threat to the survival and existence of our very country”: Donald Trump wrote this on his social Truth a few hours before the TV duel with the president.
USA 2024: tonight the TV challenge between Biden and Trump
At 3am Italian time, 9pm local time, millions of Americans will tune in to CNN for the highly anticipated debate between the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and his predecessor and challenger, Donald Trump, determined to take back the White House four years after a defeat he has never acknowledged legitimacy indeed. Polls continue to bet on a neck-and-neck race, with “The Donald” holding a slight lead in key states set to decide an election where a few hundred thousand votes could make the difference between winner and loser.
The televised duel could therefore have a decisive weight on a game that remains wide open and has seen the tone progressively rise in recent weeks, with attacks played increasingly on a personal level. Facing each other for 90 minutes will be the two oldest candidates in the history of the United States: 81 years old for the Democrat, 78 for the Republican. Despite being slightly older than his opponent, Biden is the target of the most criticism for his possible inadequacy due to his advanced age.. The latest public outings have shown a tired and tired president, at times almost absent.
Trump gives the impression of greater physical vigor but his mental clarity also raises doubts. Some reporters, for example, have reported that during his latest court appearances the tycoon fell asleep and sometimes responded incoherently. This is also why the Republican side, despite having claimed that Biden will resort to stimulants to hold the debate, has recently shifted its focus from the senility of the current commander in chief to his management of the economy and immigration.
The latter is the hottest topic. The face-to-face meeting will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, a state that is a symbol of both Trump’s legal troubles, accused of having pressured local authorities after the 2020 vote to manipulate the count in his favor, and Biden’s struggle to stem the irregular flows arriving from Mexico. Trump has repeatedly pointed the finger at violent crimes committed by immigrants and has promised mass deportations. Biden responded by announcing yesterday that the recent crackdown on border control has brought illegal crossings to their lowest levels in three years. The outgoing president will instead leverage his rival’s incendiary and provocative rhetoric and his numerous legal woes, as well as the fear that he intends to take advantage of a return to the White House to settle unfinished business and resolve his legal troubles. The Democratic campaign has thus argued that Trump is more concerned with taking his “revenge” than with the interests of citizens and the Democratic National Committee has put up billboards in Atlanta reminding voters that the tycoon has received criminal convictions.
If Biden spent the week off the radar in the Camp David mountain retreat near Washington, with simulated debates, Trump’s preparation was more relaxed and favored informal rallies and round tables. Moreover, according to the Republican front, the duel was distorted from the start, being hosted by CNN which it has repeatedly accused of bias.
It was moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, who promised to “use all the tools at their disposal to enforce speaking times and guarantee a civil debate”. The imperative is in fact to avoid the chaos of the first face-to-face meeting of 2020, when the two contenders spent an hour and a half insulting and interrupting each other. This time each candidate’s microphone will be turned off during the other’s speech and there will be no audience. Biden won a coin toss that allowed him to choose a side on stage and whether to speak first or second during closing statements. The outgoing president chose to position himself on the right of the screen and let Trump have the last word.
CNN it did not indicate which topics will be covered and does not foresee real-time fact checking, an option that, according to some analysts, could have heated up the atmosphere. Furthermore, the two candidates will not have a “prompter” at their disposal, will not be able to bring cards into the studio and will not be able to speak to their staff during commercial breaks. Anomalies that accompany one that is historic: the confrontation takes place four months before the elections, never so early, with two contenders who have not yet received the official investiture from their respective parties. A second duel is scheduled for September 10, two months before the vote, and will be hosted by ABC.
