Guadalajara.- After the insecurity incident that occurred in Michoacán due to which the United States stopped avocado imports, Jalisco producers were alert.
Andrés Canales, president of the Agricultural and Agroindustrial Development Council of Jalisco (CDAAJ), called on the authorities to continue taking care of the situation and ensure that there are no such incidents in Jalisco.
Since last Saturday, June 15, the US Government temporarily suspended imports of avocado produced in Michoacán, after an incident against inspectors from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) during a blockade.
The event reportedly occurred when two American inspectors were detained during a demonstration in the community of Aranza, in the Municipality of Paracho, about 35 kilometers north of the city of Uruapan.
Due to this, the US embassy in Mexico activated a security protocol, which includes the temporary suspension of imports.
Although the Secretary of Economic Development of Jalisco, Roberto Arechederra, stated that this would be a commercial advantage for the State that will have to be taken advantage of, Canales pointed out that there is no advantage because the export has already been done.
“The export capabilities we have and the sale of avocado to the United States, well, it is already, in some way, done. So, well, I don’t think there will be a substantial increase in Jalisco avocado. Of course it puts us on alert regarding issues of security that fortunately our State has not presented itself and that we hope do not happen. We do call on the authorities to continue taking care of this situation and that Jalisco cannot have this type of incidents,” he said.
He recalled that the conditions in Jalisco are different from those in Michoacán, which means that the producers are also in different conditions.
Arechederra pointed out that the Ministry of Rural Development is working to assist foreign supervisors so that they can circulate in the State safely, but they also work in coordination with the Ministry of Security.
“We have not had, as the Ministry of Economic Development, any company that has said “I’m leaving” or “I’m not arriving” due to insecurity issues. I believe that companies recognize very clearly that insecurity is a phenomenon that is being combated. , that strategies must be generated to combat it in a much more efficient way at the national level,” he expressed.
