Salvador Villalva Flores, retired Navy captain and recently elected mayor of the city of Copala, located in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, was brutally shot to death in a criminal attack that occurred this Monday (17).
The attack occurred in the early hours of the morning, while Villalva Flores was returning by bus from Mexico City to Copala. At the time of the attack, the vehicle was traveling along the Acapulco – Pinotepa Nacional highway.
According to information from the Argentine website Infobae, Villalva Flores was returning from a meeting at the Navy Secretariat when the attack, carried out by armed men who surrounded the bus, took place. The elected mayor was part of the México Avança party.
The politician had obtained more than 39% of the votes during the last elections, in which he beat José Luis Chávez Ventura, candidate of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), of the current elected president of Mexico.
According to information, the criminal act also resulted in another person being injured, a woman whose name was not revealed.
The Guerrero State Attorney General’s Office confirmed the murder of Villalva Flores and reported that investigations into the crime are ongoing, however, it did not release further details. The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, from Morena, expressed her condolences and condemned the attack against the elected mayor via social media.
The death of Villalva Flores occurs in a context of extreme violence in Mexico, where several candidates were killed during the last general election, which culminated in Claudia Sheinbaum’s victory in the presidential race.
