Asthenia, tiredness, malaise. Many people, with the arrival of the first warm weather, feel the ‘summer sickness’. This happens because “sweating increases, you become dehydrated and therefore your blood volume drops. Added to this is a significant vasodilation. These two effects affect the cardiovascular system, lower blood pressure and you can feel ill, dejected”. Added to this is “the sudden change in temperatures, which does not help with adaptation”, explains Giorgio Sesti, president of the Italian Society of Internal Medicine (Simi), to Adnkronos Salute.
The remedies “are always the same – continues Sesti – starting with drinking a lot. Water is the real remedy. And you need to stay in cool, ventilated, shaded places, avoiding going out during the hottest hours of the day”. The other element of discomfort “is the fact that our organism does not have time to get used to the temperatures because we go from a normal climate to a very hot one. The abrupt change affects a sense of discomfort”.
“Common sense – highlights Sesti – must be our compass. And water our remedy, because we are made of water”. As for supplements, “all the saline ones normally used are fine, but a good consumption of fruit and vegetables is more than sufficient to replenish the mineral salts”, he concludes.
