We finally got to see some gameplay taken from the new Dragon Age The Veilguardpreviously known by the name of Dreadwolfwhich will be the fourth chapter of the branded series BioWare published by IT’S AT. The new game seems to have some strengths and weaknesses, which can already be recognized from the recently published gameplay video. However, you must always take into consideration the fact that it is still a title still under developmentand that things could change once it hits digital and physical shelves.
Dragon Age becomes action
Dragon Age The Veilguard is the fourth installment of the series, and a Direct sequel to Dragon Age Inquisitionreleased way back in 2014: that’s right, role-playing game fans are waiting for this new title for 10 years. BioWare developers have only started releasing information in recent years, culminating in the gameplay trailer shown recently. In fact we could see about twenty minutes of it gameplay between choices and… lots of action. If you were expecting a return to the origins, this will not be the case.
One of the biggest shocks you will have when watching the trailer is certainly recognizing an action gameplay, where it seems that the developers have completely abandoned the idea of creating a turn-based game, which in a certain sense we could have expected, given the increasingly action nature of the various chapters. In fact, the only Dragon Age that has a classic rotation, a bit like now Baldur’s Gate 3is the first chapter: Origins. Already with the second and then with the third chapter, we had seen a hybrid gameplay that mixed action elements with more classic ones, things that here they seem to be completely absent.
As also explained in a BioWare Q&A on Redditthe tactical pause as we knew it no longer exists. It will still be possible to combine the casts with those of the other characters to combine and make the most of the weaknesses of the enemy that the players will have in front of them, but the camera will not go up as in the other chapters.
In this conversation, BioWare gave a lot of information about how it will be structured Dragon Age The Veilguard. Specifically they wanted to underline that the main character will be entirely customizable – also in gender and sex – and you will have to choose one of 6 backstories to give an origin to your character.
Since I am many years have passed since the last Dragon Age there will also be a summarywhich will give a general outline of the events that will help you better understand what will happen in the new chapter, and which will above all help you make the best possible decisions.
Speaking of choicesalthough those seen in the gameplay trailer were not that influential, in reality the developers have made it known that the heart of Dragon Age Veilguard and the power of choices that will be taken, that will have consequences. For this reason they decided to improve the choice wheel by giving tone and emotions before making the choice. Although, just like in the other chapters of the series, with the exception of the first chapter, Rook won’t say exactly the same words which you will see appear on the screen.

As for the gameplay of Dragon Age The Veilguard, the gameplay trailer we saw almost seemed to show it a kind of Hogwarts Legacybut much more actionwhere in reality it will also be possible to manage the skill tree of the other party members (but the archetypes for the builds will only be three, and apparently, Rook cannot be a Blood Mage).
Despite this, i fighting they will have a strong tactical footprint, especially on the higher difficulties, where you will have to manage the various synergies between party members very well in order to do as much damage as possible. Above all because, as already mentioned, tactics they will all revolve around knowing what the weaknesses of those in front of youto be able to eliminate it in the shortest possible time.
One thing that still she is not clear on the new chapter of Dragon Age is whether it will actually be possible to use too the other charactersWhy apparently this will not be the casebut until there is more information we cannot know for sure.
So has it really changed to be mainstream?
Except for a combat system that seems to be “way too much action” for an early Dragon Age fan, it seems like the heart of the title remains the same. Still, it’s sad to see one of the greatest Western turn-based RPGs become so much action, especially after Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstrated to the gaming world that it can even win the Game of the Year award even with a structure considered niche. Also because, among the abandoned things, there also seems to be theaesthetics almost dark fantasy that characterized Dragon Age Inquisition, to give space to colors and a style that suggests a change of artistic direction important.
This it does not mean that the new BioWare project is something wrong or that the nostalgia given by the old chapters should strike so much as to be said “It was better when it was worse”. Yes, because ultimately BioWare has been harshly criticized since the second chapter of the series, which due to development problems it lost its essence a bitwhile with Inquisition has recovered a bit, but has abandoned the fighting rotation, making it a bit more action than the 2. Furthermore, we must also consider that many players will start to approach the series with this chapterso giving something that many already know, like an action game, could be something good for increasing the user base.
The most importantat least in our opinion, is that don’t lose heart and the soul of the game: the plotthe choices and the fun. And if the first two can be objectively better or worse than the other chapters, enjoyment is something purely subjective. Not to mention that the there is a tactical pausealbeit modified For adapt to the action. So the key elements that made this IP great seem to be present in another form anyway. You just have to wait for it to arrive so you can try it out and “decide” whether it is a valid Dragon Age or not.
