Amid dissatisfaction and continued strike by teachers and employees of federal universities, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke on the afternoon of this Tuesday, 11th, in defense of education, and highlighted government programs aimed at the area.
Lula participated in the National Awards Ceremony of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP), promoted by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa), in Rio de Janeiro, one day after making an appeal for the end of the mobilization that paralyzed classes for All country.
“There was a lot of disbelief in this country against the attempt to give opportunities to young Brazilians, especially from the periphery. The economic elite that has governed this country, since Cabral’s time, has never cared about education. Education, for me, is an obsession,” he said.
The award ceremony was attended by ministers Camilo Santana (Education), Luciana Santos (Science, Technology and Innovation) and the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD).
The defense of education was made one day after the president said he saw no reason for the strike by teachers and employees at federal educational institutions to last. Teachers and civil servants demand salary adjustments in 2024, career restructuring and revocation of rules approved by previous governments.
