The Libyan High National Elections Commission announced, on Sunday, the start of holding elections for the “first group” of 60 municipal councils, explaining that the voter registration phase, which will last for a period of 15 days, will start from yesterday, Sunday, until June 23.
The Libyan Commission indicated that these municipalities are distributed across various regions of Libya, among the 106 municipal councils targeted for this year’s elections, pointing out that registration in the municipal council elections is a completely new registration, and is based on residence in the municipality in which the applicant for registration will vote.
The Commission confirmed that the municipal council elections (“the second group”) will begin immediately after the announcement of the final results of the “first group” elections, which are expected to be announced in the second half of next August.
The head of the Libyan Elections Commission, Imad Al-Sayeh, confirmed, during a conference of the High Elections Commission, to launch the municipal council elections process for the year 2024, that electing a local authority on sound foundations paves the way towards an executive authority capable of responding to the demands of its citizens, understanding their needs, and planning their future, explaining that elections are a means To enhance the spirit of belonging to the homeland. Al-Sayeh pointed out that the municipal elections are an opportunity to return to the state of institutions and law, and to reorganize local affairs and put the internal house in order, in line with the stability that the Libyans seek.
In turn, Libyan political researcher Idris Hamid confirmed to Al-Ittihad that the municipal elections are an important step to move the political scene and facilitate the holding of presidential elections, pointing out that there are Libyan political parties that do not want to hold these elections, and that the success of the municipal elections is a message to the Libyan street of the necessity of working to create momentum.
