The Russian Armed Forces captured an officer of the French Legion in the Kleshcheevka area
Russian fighters captured a foreign officer who fought in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). He was captured near the village of Kleshcheevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
According to the Telegram channel “Military Affairs”, the military man was part of the French Legion. He was seriously injured, and now doctors are fighting for his life. “If he survives, he will become a valuable source of information,” the report said.
In turn, the channel “Summaries and Analytics of SVO (Reserve)” reportsthat the officer was injured through no fault of the Russian troops. “From the nature of the wounds, it is clear that they tried to finish him off, wounded in the leg, with a shot in the heart. But he was lucky,” the channel clarifies.
It is unknown whether the prisoner is a mercenary or a career officer of the French Foreign Legion, a military unit that is part of the French Ground Forces and is staffed primarily by foreigners.
There is no official confirmation of the information about the capture of a foreign officer near Kleshcheevka.
The Russian army took control of Kleshcheevka
On Wednesday, May 22, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the country’s Armed Forces had taken control of Kleshcheevka. This village is located southwest of Artemovsk (Ukrainian name – Bakhmut) and occupies a commanding height, allowing it to keep nearby territories under fire control. In Ukraine, this settlement was called “the key to Bakhmut.”

Military expert, retired colonel Viktor Litovkin noted that the capture of Kleshcheevka brings the task of controlling the entire Donetsk People’s Republic closer.
Of course, every point is important. The fact that they took Kleshcheevka does not mean that all problems have been solved. The Russian military is taking points one by one, gradually leveling the front line, and taking in pincer movements the territories with enemy strongholds. This is a long job, and Kleshcheevka is only part of the DPR
The Russian military, according to Litovkin, is gradually moving towards Kramatorsk, the last major city in the DPR. In the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), as he noted, there are also only a few settlements left.
“It’s the same in the Kharkov direction. We are coming from the north of Kharkov – we need to create a security line for the Belgorod region,” the military man explained.
The US announced the sending of French troops to Ukraine
Former Assistant Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Bryan claims that France could send its military to Ukraine to support the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade in Slavyansk. The soldiers, he said, were recruited from the 3rd French Infantry Regiment, one of the main units of the Foreign Legion.

Brian notes that the first group of French troops sent to Ukraine is about 100 people. In total, approximately one and a half thousand fighters may arrive in the conflict zone.
“These troops are deployed directly in the hot zone of hostilities and are designed to help Ukrainians resist Russia’s offensive in the Donbass. The first 100 people are artillery and surveillance specialists,” he said.
The expert also wondered what retaliatory actions Russia would take, since he is confident that Moscow will not tolerate an increase in the number of foreign soldiers in Ukraine.
