Points goal in Monaco
The last weekend in Imola almost didn’t give in to Haas to return to the points zone, an objective that the US team has been missing since the Chinese GP with Hülkenberg’s 10th place. A placing that the German driver himself came close to in Emilia-Romagna with 11th position, immediately followed by his teammate Kevin Magnussen, author of a good performance after starting from the rear.
The Monegasque Saturday challenge
The opportunity to make up for it will now be Monaco Grand Prix, which for Hülkenberg represents a second home GP in Germany’s absence from the world championship. A street circuit that could offer the opportunity for the future Sauber driver to return to the points zone especially in the event of a good performance in qualifying, as happened in Imola with 10th place: “I have been living in Monaco since 2015, this will be my 11th Monaco Grand Prix and I have attended the race many times growing up – declared the 36-year-old, 12th in the standings on equal points with Bearman, third Haas driver – Monaco is an icon, it’s all about tradition; the palace, the hotels and many places that still have a dress code to enter. The history and the legacy that is here, everyone embraces and respects it, and I like that. Here in Monaco we always focus a little more on qualifying. But it’s the same thing every weekend, from scratch you have to try to get a good feeling with the car, and the difficulty of qualifying in Monaco is that you really have to master the lap and get all three sectors together. It’s a tightrope race, a challenge every year and one of my favorite tracks to drive, I’m looking forward to the journey and the challenge.”
Emotion in the Principality
Particularly important race for both Hülkenberg and his teammate Magnussenso far only in points in Australia and called upon to no longer make errors or irregular maneuvers that could lead to further sanctions, having accumulated 10 penalties out of the maximum 12 allowed: “It’s the best track on the calendar to drive, it’s just phenomenal on these narrow streets with walls everywhere – specified the Dane – the feeling of driving a Formula 1 in Monaco, for me, is the best of the year. We know that there are no overtaking in the race; in all the other races where overtaking opportunities are quite good, this one is a bit strange because there is so little. Perhaps there could be more qualifying sessions or a Sprint to throw a twist. The Monaco Grand Prix is part of the triple crown, it’s one of those races that if you win it’s even more special, and having driven there it’s really special, so I hope it stays on the calendar. In other races, you take laps to explore different techniques and quickly find the limit. In Munich, however, we are getting closer and closer to the limit and, given that it is a track that is really used, it has a remarkable track evolution. In Monaco all the celebrations that take place are clearly visible. In other races, the parties take place in the city’s clubs, while in Monaco they take place on the Rascasse track and people spill drinks on the track! I love Monaco, it’s my favorite race.”
