Newey is not in Imola
After making his separation from Red Bull official, Adrian Newey he showed up in Miami to greet the team. The English designer was present at the wall, but did not participate in the technical meetings. A sort of gardening disguised as F1, given that it will only deal with the activities related to the presentation of the RB17 hypercar until the early conclusion of the relationship with Red Bull, which will take place in the first months of 2025.
This week Newey gave an interview – in the company of Eddie Jordan – to the channel YouTube of the Oyster company, the shipyard with which he decided to build his own in recent months sailing yacht. Clearly Newey participated in both the design and engineering of the boat, with bespoke solutions to be implemented in the 27 meter Oyster 885 with which will travel the world in these months of relaxation away from Formula 1. As planned, the English engineer is not present in Imola, but his participation in some future events on the calendar is not ruled out.
And after the holiday?
In the chat spread in recent days, Newey has essentially cleared the field of the retirement hypothesis: “I’m feeling a little tired at the moment, but I’ll probably be back at some point. I’m considering going somewhere else and doing four or five years.”. Non-random phrases, which have inevitably been compared to Ferrari.
As reported in recent weeks by FormulaPassion.it, the negotiation between Newey and Maranello dates back to over a year agowith the parties exploring all aspects of a possible collaboration together.
Finding many common points, such as the identification of a role that could allow the Briton to work remotely, but also the attractiveness of other projects to tackle with Ferrari, from boats to hypercars to road cars. In short, on the part of the Maranello management, the foundations were laid to allow Newey to work in absolute freedomto unleash all its creativity as early as 2025.
Vasseur’s balancing acts
If Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc let out eloquent smiles when talking about the British designer and confirm in their statements their impatience to see Newey dressed in red, Frederic Vasseur he is instead taking on the role of a firefighter. TO Republic has explained: “Adrian is a reference for all of Formula 1 for his experience and his palmarès, he is perhaps the one who has the most experience of all. Having said that, I believe much more in the group than in individuals”to the New York Times was even more cryptic: “Recruiting people takes a long time“. On the other hand, Serra and D’Ambrosio were made official on 13 May (and will begin in Maranello on 1 October), when the negotiations were now expected to be concluded by July 2023 and March 2024 respectively.
The rumors about the signing
The most attentive will then have read the article of Daily Mail signed by Jonathan McEvoy who spoke of Italian sources who would have ensured of contract already signed between Newey and Ferrariwith a major increase compared to the £15 million he receives at Red Bull.
Rumors that have been pouring in over the last few days: recently the Corriere della Sera told of one Newey looking for a mooring in Liguria for his yacht, as well as F1-Insider he went so far as to write about his wife Amanda who is apparently looking for a house in the Modena area.
From what was collected by FormulaPassion.it, the signature on the contract has not yet arrived. No alarmism: the whole paddock is now talking about Newey’s arrival at Ferrari.
The agreement is there, but the signature is missing. However, a detail that is not negligible, given that we are talking about a character who is certainly unique in the world of Formula 1. And with a rather singular perception of things, as he also implied in the last interview: “I never thought that my farewell from Red Bull would cause such a stir. Finding it in all the newspapers and television was a shock.” Ferrari keeps a low profile, with confidence.
