Google unveiled Gemini, its most advanced and versatile artificial intelligence (AI) model yet. This tool will be integrated into both Bard, Google’s platform, and the latest Pixel 8 Pro smartphones. Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Gemini’s cutting-edge performance on several industry-leading benchmarks. Gemini 1.0 will be available in different versions: Ultra, Pro and Nano. “These are the first models of the Gemini era and realize the vision we had when we founded Google DeepMind earlier this year. This new era of models represents one of the largest scientific and engineering efforts undertaken by our company,” he said Pichai said.
A collaborative effort by teams at Google, including Google Research, Gemini was designed to be able to “generalize and seamlessly understand, operate on, and combine different types of information, including text, code, audio, images, and video.” . During a demonstration, Google showed how Gemini can see with a human eye, understand, evaluate in real time and suggest the next step. The Gemini Ultra will be the larger and more capable model for highly complex tasks, while the Gemini Pro will excel at tackling a wide range of tasks, and the Gemini Nano will handle tasks directly on the devices. Starting today, Gemini Nano will be available in the Pixel 8 Pro, powering new features like Summary in the Recorder app and Smart Reply via Gboard, starting with WhatsApp. Gemini will be rolled out across additional Google products and services, including Search, Ads, Chrome, and Duet AI.
Starting December 13, developers and enterprise customers will be able to access Gemini Pro via the Gemini API in Google AI Studio or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Android developers will also be able to use Gemini Nano via AICore, a new system feature available in Android 14, starting with Pixel 8 Pro devices. Gemini Ultra will be available to a limited circle of customers, developers, partners and security experts for preliminary experiments and feedback, before rolling out to developers and enterprise customers early next year.
Meanwhile, Bard will receive a “specifically optimized version of Gemini Pro in English for advanced reasoning, planning, comprehension, and more.” Early next year, Google will introduce Bard Advanced, which will give users first access to its most advanced models and capabilities, starting with Gemini Ultra. Google says Gemini Ultra’s performance exceeds current state-of-the-art results in 30 of 32 benchmarks commonly used in language model research and development. With a score of 90.0%, Gemini Ultra is the first model to outperform human experts in large-scale multitasking language understanding, which uses a combination of 57 subjects such as mathematics, physics, history, law, medicine and ethics to test both knowledge of the world and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, the company said Gemini can “understand, explain and generate high-quality code in the world’s most popular programming languages, such as Python, Java, C++ and Go”.
