Javier Milei, candidate for the presidency of Argentina, raised a strong annoyance for the words he has used to refer to Pope Francis, his countryman. Before the election campaign, he had called him a “donkey.” However, until now the Church of Argentina reacted to what was said.

Milei has been recognized for his ideology, which he himself calls “libertarian”, and which has allowed him to reach the second round of the Argentine elections to be held in October 2023. He is a staunch critic of communism, so much so that he linked to the figure of the supreme pontiff.
Javier Milei’s attack on Pope Francis
For the politician, the Pope has been wrong to promote “social justice” -a principle based on equal opportunities and human rights, according to Unicef-.
“Social justice is envy, resentment. (…) The imbecile who is in Rome and defends social justice should be informed… That he knows what robbery is and that it goes against the commandments”, expressed in a talk in 2020 with the channel Liberty World Reviewwhich was resumed just in this presidential campaign.
“The Pope, I am going to say it up front, is the representative of the evil one on Earth, occupying the throne of the house of God. The Pope promotes communism, with all the disasters it caused,” he said.

The Argentine economist described who is in the Vatican as “unpresentable”: “He promotes poverty, a regime of misery. This guy promotes a system that kills people.”
In another interview before being a candidate, he had assured that he did not feel identified with the Church: “Pope Francis seems to me to be one of the worst and most disastrous characters.”

The village priests of the Capital and Greater Buenos Aires and, with the endorsement of the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Monsignor Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva, decided to celebrate a mass of reparation for the attacks against Pope Francis for September 2023.
“Not only during the campaign. Already in 2017 and 2018 he uttered insults, lies and offenses against Francisco, whom he defined as a Jesuit who promotes communism,” one of the priests described Milei’s opinions.
In the Church they consider that the expressions of the politician contribute to generating an adverse climate towards the figure of the pontiff, which often has media repercussions.
“A politician can say, with all due respect, that he does not agree with things that the Pope says, but uttering the most serious insults, unworthy of someone who is running for such an important role as the Presidency of the Nation is serious. Unless we think that society has to be based on insults,” said Father José María Di Paola, a reference for the priests in the villas and coordinator of the Hogares de Cristo, for the Télam agency.
The reparation mass will take place on September 11. It will be a response from the church in Argentina to Milei. Of course, the Vatican has not referred to the words of the presidential candidate.
